Remixability

I read the remixability article and I find it vey interesting. At first it reminded me about Napster and how the recording labels tried to accuse them of stealing money from musicians and artists, then I realized that it doesn't have anything to do with that. In this capatalist society we are filled with the idea that we always need to be making a buck and anything that we create should be labeled as our own, copyrighted and only given out for the right price.

Remixiblity throws the entire idea out the window. Information, ideas, creation in every form in this day in age is faster than any marketing model or business plan can come up with. In a society where photogragphy is created on a drunken walk to a bar simply with the use of a cell phone, there is no controlling it. People in this day in age are being able to capture their ideas and creations faster and easier because of the technology available.

What comes next is the interesting part. Is it all too much for our society to keep up with? Maybe for those without a computer in the household, but certainly not for the 6yr old who will grow up playing kids games online. The information will continue to grow as users become more and more comfortable and familiar with what is available. As more and more people become familar with how they can make an input into the system or information, the more we will see the information change and form into something new. The more remixability occurs, the more spectacular the creation will become. The amount and type of art online has changed whithin the past ten years tremendously. Now just imagine if whithin the next ten years, that many more people became familiar with using flash and gained the knowledge from the past, wow, now that will be some great work.

I love the idea of remixibility and I love the fact that I have the chance to be a part of it and actually acknowledge its existence.

Can't stop thinking about creating...at work.

I am sitting at work again, as usual. I felt I just had to write about how I can't stop thinking about creating. Ever since we learned how to make a site, the last think I can think about is German class, grocery shopping, or even working at the E-Center. All I want to do is have a couple of hours to just work on some new websites that have been going through my head. It made me realize the difference in the medium. There are artists who just want to draw or paint, and depending upon what your medium of choice is, you are limited. It challenges the idea that art is art. In my case art is not art. I don't just want to draw, I want to be tested with a software I am still learning and be challenged on how I can take my drawing ablilities and smash the mediums together. How can I best show my abilities as an artist on the web. How can I show my passions and love for my son and everything that is important to me on a medium that I interact with everyday. The public nature of the internet and unbound limitations make it such a unique medium. I am going to visit my mother in India and I can show her the work, and shit, if I have access to Dreamweaver, actually work on it.
That also bring up a good point however. With such possibilities, there are also such limitations. No matter how much I have the urge to work, the fact that I don't have the software in my possesion totally screws me. Drawing is possible with any pen, pencil, marker or writing utencil and a surface to capture it. While creating a site, scanning in photos, making flash movies are impossible without the income of the upperclass in our society. This limits the medium to only be available to the select few. Granted there are free copies and pirated versions, but they are still limited to someone having the right connections. It reminds me of the camera when first invented. It is such a great way to express and create art, but started out as only limited to the rich and few.
Wow, what a sign of the times and a true reflection of our generation.

Net.art Article

For an especially tintalating read, be sure to check out the article on net.art:
http://ricksilva.net/digitalone/greene.pdf

I admit that I am being overly cynical. The article, "slash novel" is a monotone introduction to a new world. Anyone with any art background has heard of art movements and specific social groups made up of artists pushing the edge. Artists who braught us Expressionism, Bauhaus, etc... This article introduces us to a movement of our generation. One that is only limited by one's knowledge of the medium and not by their age location on this globe.

The movement itself blows me away. There is something unique about this medium compared to its predecessors. In the past, artist would create art for people to view and and to some extent, in the form of performance art, actually interact and experience. This of course is debatable and I am probably getting in a little over my head, but there is something different with the art dicussed in this article. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am a little overwhelmed at the thought that "this world" is considered art.

From my understanding, this art is the understanding and display of this online world. The forms vary from people making visual based ascetics, all the way to hackers displaying the true identity of the technology through its vulnerability. It creates so many discussions on what is art and what is not. Almost the same dicussions made with Duechamp's "Decending A Staicase."

What is also neat to think about is the affect this art has on the rest of the world and how it is almost a forced interaction of the common population. Someone can create a virus in the name of art that will fly through the rest of the world causing mass computer desruction. Working for a spyware removal software company puts me in a unique perspective. I can work for a company that was built soley on the ability of other people's experimintation and skill of the internet. I am referring to the "artists" creating spyware, malware, keyloggers, trojans and other fun explorations of creativity of course. The company I work for can't sell anything to someone who does not go online. Using the internet has forced the world to interact, whether we like it or not.

The net.art article has given me an introduction to this art movement. It is an introduction to artists who are creating and pushing this internet world, the same as artsits have done with differnet mediums in the past. Damn this is exciting!

Sitting at work

This job has been tough on me. Even now, i have a hard time trying to have a productive bone in my body. I visited the doctor today after a week of trying to hold out while my body, as the doctor put it, "felt like it was hit by a Mack Truck." The energy will be back in a few days though, and maybe I can get back to doing the work. Projects are racing in my head right now. An abstract piece challenging me in Drawing class. I keep thinking how I can push it a little farther, but at the same time, feeling unimpressed by it. Can't stop thinking about putting more into the website. What steps I can take, how much time i can put into it, how it is really what I want to pour my energy into. The whole E-Center project looms over my head. i know it will be great if I put the time into it, but does not make me want to do it. Times sneaks by, faster and faster. The paper's due date jump out at the same time this all goes down. How convenient! Where is the fire, where is the hunger, where is the determination i rely on? Is it the sickness, or is it something else? I've had plenty of time to sleep, how about getting some energy and working now! Oh what fun this material world is. When is the last time I chanted?
